Gateway to the city of Nice looks more attractive
with T40 guardrails

Gateway to the city of Nice

1.6 km section of T40 mixed wood & steel guardrails with containment level H2 (for heavy vehicles) are now protecting the median of the road to the city of Grenoble, the true Nice gateway . Jacques Le Corre, from the Alpes Maritimes (South-East of France) County Council Road Authority , explains main reasons for this choice.

What is the configuration of this job ?

Jacques Le Corre : “ The site that must be made-up on Road 60202 median is 4 KM long on the “Var” river’s left bank, from St Isidore Interchange to La Manda bridge. On last autumn, a first section of 800 LM had been equipped with TERTU T40 guardrails on both carriage ways. Built more recently, new road 60202B that spans the river “Var” and runs along its right bank, has won the “LANDSCAPE” Award , a competition organized by the Ministry of Sustainable Development . So the older Road 6202 was looking a bit dull in comparison . The County Council has wished to make it more attractive.”

What were main concerns about construction ?

Jacques Le Corre : “This site is strategical as it is one of the main gateways to Nice. The traffic is intense , reaching 20 000 vehicles daily. So the concerns were environmental, as respecting the panorama is essential in this area and the County Council wished to modify the landscape accordingly ; others concerns were at technical level with the will to homogenize design speed to 90 KM/H on the whole roads network and specify a safety level adapted to this kind of infrastructures and traffic. It has been an important job , requiring good coordination between the different companies involved.”

Why did you choose wood option ?

Jacques Le Corre : :”With the choice of the wooden guardrail we have been able to improve the containment level from N2 (for light vehicles) to H2 (for heavy vehicles), and also answer to our environmental requirements. This option allowed us to rule out New Jersey barrier option , certainly efficient but less aesthetic. CE marking has also been an asset. Wooden guardrails are globally appreciated in our mountain hinterland, what also allowed us to harmonize secondary roads network . It also fits the planting such as laurels and olive trees that we have inserted within the guardrails.”

Any future projects for this site ?

Jacques Le Corre : “We wish to install wood & steel guardrails on the remaining 4 KM section to be renovated . This first stage represents a significant test and we are waiting for road users feed back .”
